Cave In - Tides Of Tomorrow [EP]

We hoped for the next official album of new material after "Jupiter" would be released sometime in the fall of 2002. But because of scheduling conflicts with our producer and our own touring commitments, this would turn out to be impossible. To make up for the extended gap of time until the release of another proper album, we decided to do an EP of songs in our time off from touring. "Come Into Your Own" and "Dark Driving" had been songs we toyed with at practice and made various demos of, but we didn't really picture either as being potential material for our next album. "The Callus" is a song we had been playing live fairly often, especially on the Plea For Peace tour we did in the summer of 2001. It's originally written by the now-defunct mid-western greats Giants Chair, released as a B-side on the rare "Purity And Control" single issued on a 7" by Caulfield Records sometime in 1996. It happens to be one of Scott Hobart's (of Giants Chair) favorite songs by the band. We had also made a couple demos of it and decided that it would fit in well on this EP. Miraculously, it seems that Cave In will be the first band to officially release a Giants Chair cover song. There is a first for everything. The remaining 3 songs "The Calypso", "Tides Of Tomorrow", and "Everest" were all conceived during our post-European 2001 winter tour rehearsals. "The Calypso" is for the most part, musically and lyrically, Caleb's creation. "Tides Of Tomorrow" was conceived, musically and partially lyrically, by Adam after our soundman Matt Sutton had taught him a few jazzy guitar chords. The working title for "Everest" had been "The Battle Of Cavermore" before Stephen wrote proper lyrics for the song, because it's possibly a very good attempt at ripping off the Led Zeppelin song "Battle of Evermore" with a slightly more modern approach. Everest, Evermore... whatever. But you probably will think the same thing, anyway. Much of the artwork was taken from an old hard-cover book filled with paintings and photographs of war ships at sea in various settings. The imagery seemed to somewhat parallel some of the lyrical themes primarily found in the songs "The Calypso" and "Tides Of Tomorrow".

Cave In - Godcity Demos 2001

In case you missed it in the comments section of the Antenna Demos post, a reader put up a link to the 2001 demos recorded at Godcity studio. This is a snapshot of the songs Cave In was working on when trying to figure out what would eventually become Antenna. Some of these songs (Day Trader, Devils Head Pinata, Harmless/Armless) would become b-sides or bonus tracks for Antenna and it's related singles. It's an interesting look at how the album got built.

Track Listing:
  1. Bigger Riff
  2. Breath Of Water
  3. Day Trader
  4. Devil's Head Pinata
  5. Harmless, Armless
  6. Breed
  7. Stained Silver
  8. The Callus

Cave In - Antenna Demos

As the title says, these are demos for what would become the Antenna album. Best we can figure out, this is a compilation from several different recording sessions and was distributed to label people and others close to the band. The version of Lift Off and Lost In The Air (track 7) are really close to the released single. This version of Stained Silver is different than the Antenna version and ended up on the Epicenter Japanese only EP and the Hydra Head 3 Song Sampler CD.

If you have more definitive information about these demos, post it in the comments.

Track Listing:
  1. Lost In The Air
  2. Seafrost
  3. Stained Silver
  4. Anchorage
  5. Bigger Riff
  6. Lift Off

Cave In - Lift Off

Paul Kolderie & Sean Slade are best known for their work with the Pixies, Hole, Radiohead, Juliana Hatfield, Morphine and founding the Fort Apache studio in Boston. Needless to say, we were very excited to work with them. The sessions were very relaxed and went somewhat quickly. Paul played the Moog on "Lost In The Air", and in addition to the sounds we were able to get with them, we all shared a spooky intrigue for the cosmics in an interesting dinner time conversation about the NASA landing on the moon being a farce back in late 60's. And Stephen digs how the album cover art is similar to the video game Tetris.

TRACK LISTING:
1. Lift-Off
2. Lost In the Air

Cave In - Moons Of Jupiter [EP]

Wanting to do something special for our 2000-2001 US tour, we assembled this crazy looking CD (one of our favorites from Aaron Turner). Part of the Magic Bullet fan CD series, this EP includes an awesome remix of "Jupiter" done by Brian McTernan at Salad Days in Washington DC (we admit, THIS is how the entire album should sound), and we hope to someday have the entire "Jupiter" album remixed and remastered this good. The piano versions were done by Stephen on 4-track. The piano was recorded at Brookline High School, where Stephen had a painting job over the summer and took time on a lunch break one day to record these songs.

TRACK LISTING:
  1. Jupiter (remix)
  2. Big Riff (piano version)
  3. Innuendo and Out the Other (piano version)
  4. New Moon (piano version)

Cave In - Jupiter

"Jupiter" is Cave In's second 'real' full-length record, and seemingly the toughest for us to write. We started writing these songs sometime in the spring of 1999 after our Dillinger Escape Plan / Converge winter tour. The actual recording process went fairly quick and somewhat trouble-free despite the rough roads leading to this point. All the basic tracks were recorded live, which we surprisingly hadn't done for an album until "Jupiter". We wanted this to sound sort of like a "live" Cave In record with some polish on the final product, and we believe for the most part that we did it. And damn, we barely survived off Morning Star Hot Pockets and terrible Stoughton Chinese food during tracking & mixing. Thankfully, Mr. Shoeshine oversaw the entire recording ordeal and made sure we retained our sanity as much as we could.

TRACK LISTING:
  1. Jupiter
  2. In the Stream of Commerce
  3. Big Riff
  4. Innuendo and Out the Other
  5. Brain Candle
  6. Requiem
  7. Decay of the Delay
  8. New Moon

The Sacrifice Poles - The Sacrifice Poles

A lo-fidelity Cave In alter-ego comprised of highly-improvised instrumental pieces with traces of "Dead Man" soundtrack, early Iceburn, and "Instrument"-esque Fugazi.

We started writing these songs sometime in the spring of 1999 after our Dillinger Escape Plan / Converge winter tour. We recorded random demos of a few songs during a couple of in-between recording sessions. Traditionally, Cave In 4-tracks demo versions of anything the band is about to record in a studio. The Sacrifice Poles pieces are left-overs of ideas & drawn-out jams from these 4-track recordings that didn't end up on "Jupiter" (with the exception of "Brain Candle Waltz"). - Text from cavein.net.
